Sudan freezes IGAD membership over sovereignty concerns
Sudan has officially frozen its membership in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), citing the bloc's disregard for Sudan's decision.

Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, communicated the decision to freeze membership to the president of the current IGAD session.
Sudan's move follows the IGAD summit held in Uganda on January 18, where the country's crisis was on the agenda, and Sudan chose to boycott the event.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry stated that the IGAD summit's final communique violated Sudan's sovereignty, and Sudan does not adhere to or concern itself with IGAD statements regarding Sudanese affairs.
The IGAD had previously approved a meeting between Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces, but it was postponed for "technical reasons."
Sudan has been grappling with deadly clashes between these forces since April 15, 2023, resulting in thousands of casualties and millions displaced.
The IGAD has been pressuring Sudanese factions to sign a truce agreement for humanitarian aid delivery. (ILKHA)
