UN calls for solidarity and inclusion on World Refugee Day amidst unprecedented displacement

With a staggering 110 million people globally forced to flee their homes, Guterres calls for increased efforts to find solutions for resettlement and assist refugees in rebuilding their lives. He also stresses the need for solidarity with host countries and communities, acknowledging that behind these numbers are individual women, children, and men enduring arduous journeys, often encountering violence, exploitation, discrimination, and abuse.

The theme for this year's World Refugee Day is "Hope Away From Home." Guterres, who led the UN refugee agency UNHCR for a decade, urges the international community to embrace the hope carried within the hearts of refugees. Visiting the expansive Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, the current UNHCR chief, Filippo Grandi, echoes this sentiment, urging increased investment and commitment to include refugees in all aspects of society, such as schools, workplaces, and healthcare systems.

In a tweet, Grandi laments the unfortunate coincidence of World Refugee Day with the news that over half a million people have recently fled Sudan, seeking refuge in neighboring countries. He emphasizes the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities, declaring, "Guns must fall silent if we want this exodus to stop."

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) also acknowledges World Refugee Day and honors the resilience and strength of those forced to flee conflict. Since 2001, the IOM has provided orientation training to over one million people on the move, including approximately 700,000 refugees who have been successfully resettled.

Cindy McCain, the head of the World Food Programme, highlights the detrimental impact of conflicts and climate shocks, leading to an alarming rise in hunger and homelessness. The World Food Programme, in collaboration with partners like UNHCR, is working diligently to deliver critical aid to millions of refugees across more than 40 countries. McCain emphasizes the ongoing necessity of support for refugees, urging continued assistance today and every day.

As World Refugee Day raises awareness of the challenges faced by refugees worldwide, the UN and its agencies are calling upon governments, organizations, and individuals to join forces, showing compassion, solidarity, and inclusion in order to provide refuge and support for those in need.
