Decision of "independence referendum" from the Iraqi Supreme Court

In Iraq, the Federal Supreme Court announced its decision on the independence referendum of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government [KRG]. The Court emphasized the territorial integrity of the country, stressing that "the Constitution does not recognize the right to secede any component".

The Iraqi government has taken it to the Supreme Court, demanding "confirmation of the territorial integrity of Iraq" and "misinterpretation of the Constitution."

"The Federal Supreme Court took a decision describing the first article of the Constitution at today's meeting. The other relevant provisions of Iraq's Constitution with the matter in soil that emphasizes the integrity of Iraq and 109th article is about protection of all federal territorial integrity" said in a statement Federal Court spokesman Yas Samuk.

Samuk remarked that the court has reached to the "There is no article that permits the removal of any component," conclusion.

Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government [KRG] held a referendum on September 25th, supporting 93 percent of the country's independence. The Baghdad government, on the other hand, initiated an operation to regain disputed territories under the control of the Peshmerga. In operation, all of Kirkuk was seized.

KRG President Masoud Barzani blamed the troops of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union who left their place, the opposition Goran Movement had made a call criticized Barzani to resign sharply over losing Kirkuk.

Following the developments, the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government High Election and Referendum Commission halt the presidential and parliamentary elections foreseen to be held on November 1. The Parliament of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, gathered in Erbil, took a decision to postpone presidential and general elections eight-month which scheduled for November 1. (ILKHA)
