Cholera outbreak claims 20 lives in Hammanskraal, South Africa

The latest report reveals that the death toll has tragically risen to 20. Efforts are underway to address the situation and investigate the possible sources of contamination, as authorities work diligently to curb the spread of the disease.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Department of Health, the number of patients receiving treatment at Jubilee District Hospital has now reached 179, highlighting the severity of the outbreak. Out of these patients, 18 individuals have been transferred to Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Steve Biko Academic Hospital for further medical attention.

The data provided in the statement also sheds light on the extent of the cholera outbreak. To date, there have been 29 laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera, indicating the presence of the disease within the affected area. Additionally, 78 individuals have been admitted to medical facilities due to gastrointestinal infection, further emphasizing the urgent need for intervention and care.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the government has launched comprehensive efforts to investigate and address the root causes of the outbreak. In response to the cholera epidemic, authorities have commenced testing various water sources, including water tankers, taps, and the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant. This thorough examination aims to identify and eliminate potential sources of contamination, ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected population.
