US Senate proposes national age limit for social media use

The proposed federal bill seeks to prohibit anyone under the age of 13 from using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

The Protecting Kids on Social Media bill also suggests that tech companies must receive parental consent before creating accounts for teenagers.

Experts believe that the bill intends to address the mental health crisis caused by social media.

The bill proposes that children under the age of 13 cannot create accounts or communicate with other users on social media platforms. However, they can still view content without logging into an account, according to the bill's draft text.

The bill also proposes that companies cannot use teenagers' personal information to target them with content or advertising.

Nevertheless, some relaxations have been suggested, such as limited targeted recommendations to teenagers by using other contextual cues. (ILKHA)
