Death toll climbs to 15 in devastating Diyarbakır-Mardin wildfires
The death toll from wildfires that ravaged areas between Diyarbakır's Çınar district and Mardin's Mazıdağı district has risen to 15, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The fires, which began on the evening of June 20th in Köksalan, Yazçiçeği (Çınar), Yücebağ, and Yetkinler (Mazıdağı), spread quickly due to strong winds, engulfing large rural areas and settlements.
The blazes caused significant devastation. The latest reported death is Kerime Erdenli, 56, who succumbed to her injuries at Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital. Over 70 people were injured, and hundreds of animals perished in the inferno.
Rescue and emergency personnel continue tireless efforts in the affected areas, providing medical attention to the injured and battling the remaining flames. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fires and assessing the full extent of the damage.
