The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake hit 126 kilometers south-southeast of Kyzyl-Suu at 6:09 p.m. GMT, with a depth of 27.4 kilometers.

The initial epicenter was determined to be at 41.29 degrees north latitude and 78.59 degrees east longitude.

In Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, residents fled their houses and gathered outside despite the cold weather, some dressed in pajamas and slippers. No damage has been reported.

The tremors, followed by aftershocks about 30 minutes later, were also felt in Uzbekistan. (ILKHA)
