Pakistan’s election body rejects Imran Khan’s nomination for 2024 national elections

The decision follows Khan's imprisonment in August 2023 on charges that include leaking state secrets and selling state gifts during his tenure.

Despite corruption convictions disqualifying him from the February 8 elections, Khan submitted nomination papers on Friday.

The Election Commission of Pakistan, in rejecting Khan's candidacy, cited his lack of registration as a voter in the constituency, emphasizing that he had been "convicted by the court of law and has been disqualified."

The move adds a new layer of complexity to the political landscape, as Khan continues to assert that the military is collaborating with traditional dynastic parties to suppress his populist movement and prevent him from participating in the electoral process.

Khan, a former cricket star, has been in detention since August, with his allegations of military interference raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.

As the political drama unfolds, the rejection of Khan's nomination sets the stage for heightened tensions and further scrutiny of Pakistan's evolving political dynamics. (ILKHA)
