Devastating landslide in Georgia mountain resort leaves 17 dead and 18 missing
In a tragic incident that occurred three days ago, the death toll from a massive landslide in the picturesque mountain resort area of Shovi, Georgia, has reached 17, as confirmed by officials.
The rescue operations have been tirelessly ongoing since the disaster struck the region.
Shovi, renowned for its stunning mountain views and mineral springs, is situated approximately 140 kilometers northwest of Georgia's capital, Tbilisi, and hosts a number of quaint cottages and small hotels.
Temur Mgebrishvili, the head of the Georgian Internal Affairs Ministry’s Emergency Management Service, solemnly disclosed the rising death toll and expressed concern for 18 individuals who are still missing. Presently, only seven of the deceased have been identified, and the identities of the other victims will be determined through DNA analysis.
Preliminary assessments suggest that heavy rainfall in the area, combined with recent erosion, likely triggered the catastrophic landslide. The disaster has left the community in deep grief and shock, as they come to terms with the immense devastation caused to their beloved region.
Authorities and rescue teams are continuing their relentless efforts to locate the missing individuals and provide support to the affected families during this difficult time. (ILKHA)
