Experts have cautioned that the elderly, young children, and dogs are most vulnerable to the extreme heat, which is being caused by a high-pressure anticyclone named Cerberus.

Fifteen cities in Italy are under heat advisories, with temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas. In Greece, the Acropolis has been closed from noon to 5:30 p.m. to protect visitors from the heat.

In Spain, a wildfire on the island of La Palma has forced the evacuation of around 500 people. Officials have warned that the fire could spread due to shifting winds and dry terrain.

In Türkiye, coastal cities in the south and southwest have been experiencing temperatures in the high 30s Celsius (about 97-102 degrees Fahrenheit) and low 40s Celsius (104-109 degrees Fahrenheit). In northwestern Türkiye, 48 people have been hospitalized in the past two days with symptoms of heat stroke.

The heatwave has also impacted water levels in Istanbul, Türkiye's largest city. The Omerli Dam reservoir, already at 41% capacity due to low rainfall, is losing 17,000 tons of water per hour during the early afternoon.

Even countries farther north in Europe have been affected by the sweltering temperatures. In Poland, authorities have advised older adults to stay indoors or seek shade and stay well-hydrated as temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).

In downtown Warsaw and other cities, improvised hose fountains have been set up to provide relief for people and their pets. Police have issued warnings against leaving children or pets unattended inside cars.

Authorities Urge Precautionary Measures

Authorities across Europe are urging people to take precautionary measures to stay safe during the heatwave. These measures include staying indoors or seeking shade during the hottest part of the day, staying well-hydrated, and wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.

People who are at higher risk of heat-related illness, such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic health conditions, should be especially careful. They should avoid strenuous activity and stay in cool, well-ventilated areas.

If you experience any symptoms of heat-related illness, such as dizziness, nausea, or confusion, seek medical attention immediately. (ILKHA)
