The snow began falling early Monday morning, and by the afternoon, the city was covered in a blanket of white.

Temperatures in Johannesburg dipped below freezing, and the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued several cold weather warnings.

Photos and videos on social media showed children playing in the snow and adults making snow angels. For some youngsters, it was the first time they had ever seen snow.

The last time snow was officially confirmed in Johannesburg was in August 2012.

The SAWS said that the cold weather is expected to continue in Johannesburg for the next few days. Drivers are being warned to be careful of icy roads, and there is a chance of power outages.

Other parts of South Africa have also been hit by a harsh winter, according to local sources.

In the Eastern Cape province, temperatures have dropped below -10°C, and there have been reports of snow and ice.

The SAWS said that the cold weather is expected to continue in South Africa for the next few weeks. (ILKHA)
