Magnitude 3.7 aftershock jolts eastern Türkiye

This comes more than three months after a devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck the same region.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency reported that the aftershock occurred at 13:58 TSI, with a depth of 6.98 km, and its latitude and longitude being 38.015 degrees north and 37.639 degrees east respectively.

The earthquake that struck on February 6 resulted in significant damage and loss of life, with over 50,000 people losing their lives and 108,000 sustaining injuries across ten of the most severely affected provinces in Türkiye, as well as the adjacent provinces of Elazığ and Batman.

The earthquake also affected 13.5 million people and 4 million buildings, leaving thousands of people trapped under rubble when buildings collapsed.

Following the earthquake, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change conducted damage inspections on 763,000 buildings. At least 41,791 buildings in 10 Turkish provinces were heavily damaged or destroyed, and around 150,000 people were left homeless. (ILKHA)
