Türkiye votes in historic election following devastating earthquakes
Türkiye has commenced its presidential and parliamentary elections, with polls opening at 8 am local time on Sunday and set to close at 5 pm.
These elections are significant as they align with the centennial celebration of Türkiye's republic and are open to a vast eligible voter population of over 64 million, including 3.4 million overseas voters.
In Adıyaman, a province greatly impacted by the February 6 earthquake, voting commenced across 1,436 polling stations. Early in the morning, voters made their way to the polling centers with the hope that the election results would prove to be beneficial for the country.
Upon arriving at the polling stations, citizens verified their names on the voter lists posted outside the voting hall and began casting their votes at 8 am.
The elections mark a significant milestone as they are the first ones since the devastating earthquakes on February 6 that struck the southern regions of Türkiye.
These earthquakes, widely known as the "disaster of the century" due to their immense devastation, tragically claimed the lives of over 50,000 people and had a profound impact on 11 provinces.
To facilitate voting for the affected population, the Supreme Election Council (YSK) has established temporary polling stations in the provinces where the majority of people currently reside, as they still await the completion of extensive reconstruction efforts while residing in temporary housing units.
Residents originally from the earthquake-hit provinces will have the opportunity to cast their votes in the cities and towns they have resettled in.
However, instead of their votes being attributed to the earthquake-hit provinces where they were initially registered, they will be added to the overall votes of the cities where they currently reside.
Currently, there are approximately 133,000 voters from the earthquake-hit provinces who are now registered in other provinces. (ILKHA)
