At least 16 dead after boat capsizes in Indian state of Kerala
At least 16 people lost their lives when a boat overturned in the Malappuram district, V. Abdurahiman, the minister for fisheries and harbour development in the southern state of Kerala, India, said on Sunday evening.
Twelve bodies have been identified, Abdurrahim said, adding that the number of casualties is expected to increase.
The boat is currently stuck in the mud and efforts are underway to lift and dismantle it in order to rescue any individuals who may still be trapped inside.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the loss of lives and announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh each to the family of victims.
“Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased,” Modi said in a tweet. (ILKHA)
