Ukraine alleges Russian attack on Bakhmut with phosphorus munitions
Ukraine has leveled accusations against Russia, claiming that the besieged city of Bakhmut was targeted with phosphorus munitions.
In drone footage released by Ukraine's military, the city of Bakhmut is depicted engulfed in flames as what appears to be white phosphorus rains down upon it.
While white phosphorus weapons are not internationally banned, their utilization in civilian areas is considered a war crime due to the extensive fires they ignite, which are challenging to extinguish.
This is not the first time Russia has faced allegations of employing such munitions.
Despite Bakhmut's questionable strategic value, Russia has persistently sought to capture the city for months.
Western officials estimate a significant loss of life among Moscow's troops in their ongoing assault on the area.
“Not enough shells, but more than enough phosphorus. Ruscists are shelling unoccupied areas of Bakhmut with incendiary ammunition. They will burn in Hell,” Ukrainian defense ministry wrote on Twitter.
The exact timing of the incident remains unclear. However, Ukraine shared footage, presumably obtained from a surveillance drone, revealing towering structures consumed by flames.
Additional videos circulating on social media showcased blazing fires on the ground and luminous white clouds illuminating the nocturnal sky. (ILKHA)
