Today marks the 12th anniversary of the martyrdom of Ubeydullah Durna
Ubeydullah Durna was shot dead on the roof of an Islamic association building while trying to fend off a firebomb attack by suspected PKK members on May 5, 2011.
Durna was the Deputy Head of Mustazaf-Der in Hakkari's Yüksekova district, and his murder investigation was closed due to the actions of the FETO organization, but it was reopened approximately 10 years later. Despite the passage of time, no progress has been made in identifying or capturing those responsible for the crime.
Before his death, Durna had repeatedly repaired the Mustazaf-Der association building, which had been damaged in previous attacks. On the day of his death, he left his family to go to the association once again when he heard that it had been attacked once more. The Mustazaf-Der association and its members, including Durna, were targeted by supporters of the PKK and BDP in Yüksekova. The attackers threw Molotov cocktails at the building, which caught fire, and the members of the association were trapped inside.
Durna and his friends fought back against the attackers, but the group returned with more people and weapons. As a last resort, Durna and his friends went to the roof of the building, where they were shot at by individuals who were lying in wait. Ubeydullah Durna was martyred in the attack, which took place in front of the police and was recorded by police cameras.
Despite 12 years having passed since the incident, there has been no progress in the investigation into the murder of Ubeydullah Durna. None of the perpetrators of the attacks have been apprehended, and the case was almost left to the statute of limitations, with no significant developments. (ILKHA)
