Turkish Military Council extends term of chief of general staff for another year
The chief of general staff, General Güler, 67, will stay on in the role for another year, Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın told journalists after the closed-door meeting of the Supreme Military Council.
“In the meeting, 16 generals and admirals have been promoted to higher ranks and 47 colonels have been promoted to the ranks of general and admiral,” Kalın said, adding that the duty terms of 40 generals and admirals have been extended for a year and those of 313 colonels for two years.
Kalın noted that the term of the chief of general staff, General Yaşar Güler, has been extended for a period of one year.
According to the Military Penal Code, which came into force last month, the president can extend the term of the chief of general staff for a period of one year if the person in the position reaches the age limit.
The decision will be effective as of August 30, 2022. (ILKHA)
