Death toll from boat accident in Nigeria rises to 17
The number of people who died after a passenger boat capsized in Lagos state has risen to 17, according to Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
“The lifeless bodies of 15 more people were found during the search and rescue operations of the boat that capsized in the Ikorodu River near the Ojo region of Lagos state on July 8,” said Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Coordinator, South-West Zonal Office of the National Emergency Management Agency.
Thus, the number of people who lost their lives in the accident rose to 17.
“Several more people were missing in the accident. Search and rescue efforts are continuing,” Farinloye added.
In Nigeria, boat disasters are common on waterways mostly due to overcrowding and bad maintenance, particularly during the rainy season. (ILKHA)
