In view of the scarcity of toilet paper in parts of Germany, the alliance of Public Water Management (AöW) warned of risks to the wastewater network.
“Because toilet paper was partially unavailable in the trade due to hamster purchases, consumers resorted to wet wipes, household rolls or paper handkerchiefs. But these threatened to clog sewage pipes,” the association warned.
The association called on citizens to protect their sewage pipes, saying: “Many of the alternative products contained plastic fibers in contrast to standard toilet paper. These could not be dissolved in water and lead to clogging of the pipes. Do not throw alternative hygiene items into the toilet, but please dispose of them in well-sealed garbage bags over the grey bin.” (ILKHA)
