The assailants, identified as members of the Boko Haram jihadist group, attempted to storm the complex around 7:45 pm local time, triggering a fierce battle with security forces.

The government confirmed that 18 attackers and one security personnel member were killed in the clash. Additionally, six attackers and three security personnel were injured, with one security member sustaining serious injuries.

Infrastructure Minister Aziz Mahamat Saleh assured the public that the situation was "under control" shortly after the attack. Government spokesman and Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah later appeared in a video stating, "The situation is completely under control... the destabilization attempt was put down."

Security sources and local witnesses reported hearing gunfire and seeing tanks on the streets near the presidential complex. All roads leading to the presidency were blocked, and armed police were stationed at various points in the district.

The attack occurred just hours after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno and other senior officials.

Chad has recently faced regional tensions, including accusations of interference in Sudan's ongoing conflict. The country also recently ended a military accord with France, its former colonial power.

While the immediate crisis has been quelled, the assault underscores the persistent security challenges facing Chad as it grapples with threats from militant groups and regional instability. (ILKHA)
