Belgium condemns civilian casualties in Gaza, calls for immediate ceasefire
Belgium has condemned the ongoing loss of Palestinian civilian lives in Gaza, labeling the situation as unacceptable.
This statement comes in the wake of deadly Israeli airstrikes that damaged an office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the region.
Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib expressed her dismay on social media, stating: "The loss of civilians and the ongoing violence in Gaza are unacceptable." She urged for an immediate cessation of hostilities and called on all parties to work towards peace.
Minister Lahbib also echoed the sentiments of EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell, who has called for an independent investigation into the shelling of the ICRC office. "The EU condemns the shelling, which damaged the ICRC office in Gaza and led to dozens of casualties," Borrell posted on social media, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable.
The call for an independent investigation follows Israeli military strikes on Friday that targeted the vicinity of the ICRC office at the al-Mawasi camp, northwest of Rafah. This area had been designated a "humanitarian zone" by occupation forces. The attacks resulted in at least 25 deaths and left 50 others injured.
The international community, including Belgium and the European Union, continues to push for accountability and a peaceful resolution to the escalating conflict in Gaza. (ILKHA)
