This decision comes after months of debate within the country's ruling coalition.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo confirmed the deal following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, he emphasized that the final approval rests with the government formed after Belgian elections in May 2024.

While the jets won't arrive for at least two years, training for Ukrainian pilots and mission planners will begin in 2024. Additionally, Belgian companies will provide technical support for the F-16 fleet once delivered.

This announcement comes as Belgium transitions its own air force to the F-35 fighter jet. Delays in F-35 deliveries have opened the window for Ukraine to receive Belgium's older F-16s.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions. While some see it as a positive step, others criticize the delay, arguing that Ukraine needs the jets urgently in the ongoing conflict. (ILKHA)
