Daqqa, a resident of Baqa al-Gharbiyye, a predominantly Palestinian city within the Green Line, spent nearly four decades in Israeli prisons, according to the commission. His death is attributed to what the commission describes as a "slow killing" policy carried out against sick prisoners by the Israeli prison administration.
Daqqa was one of the most prominent and long-serving Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody. He was arrested in 1986 for the killing of an Israeli soldier and remained incarcerated since. Despite his imprisonment, he authored several books, including a children’s story.
In 1999, Daqqa married Sana Salameh while behind bars. Their daughter, Milad, was born in 2020, conceived through the smuggling of Daqqa's sperm out of prison.
In 2022, Daqqa was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a rare bone marrow cancer. Rights groups urged Israel to release him on medical grounds, citing his deteriorating health.
Last year, Addameer, a rights group advocating for Palestinian prisoners, highlighted Daqqa's urgent medical needs and accused Israeli authorities of denying him necessary treatment. They called for his immediate release, but Israel upheld his imprisonment until 2025.
Hamas Movement expressed condolences and vowed to continue advocating for the release of Palestinian prisoners. In a statement, Hamas mourned Daqqa's death and accused Israeli prisons of deliberate medical negligence leading to his demise. (ILKHA)
