The meeting, requested by permanent member Russia, is set to take place at 4:00 pm local time (2100 GMT) on Monday.

Russia's first deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, announced the urgent meeting on social media, stating that it aims to address threats to international peace and security arising from the US strikes.

The US airstrikes targeted positions in Syria's Deir ez-Zur province and the city of al-Bukamal, as well as cities near the Syrian border in Iraq's Anbar province. The attacks resulted in casualties and damage to property.

The US claims the strikes were in response to a recent deadly attack on American forces in Jordan.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's office reported 16 people killed, including civilians, and 25 others injured, denouncing the airstrikes as a new aggression against Iraq's sovereignty.

Syrian regime strongly condemned the attacks, asserting that they were intended to weaken the country's fight against terrorist groups. (ILKHA)
