The crash occurred during what Moscow described as a routine flight.

The Russian defense ministry reported that the aircraft, carrying 65 captured Ukrainian army servicemen destined for exchange, along with six crew members and three escorts, crashed at approximately 11 am Moscow time (0800 GMT). The plane was en route to the Belgorod region.
