The attack occurred on January 20, around 18:30 Baghdad time, targeting the airbase with ballistic missiles and rockets.

In an official statement, CENTCOM acknowledged the assault, noting that "most of the missiles were tracked by the air defense systems, but some hit the base, and the damages are currently being assessed." The statement also revealed that some soldiers suffered brain injuries in the attack and are currently undergoing examinations.

According to information from Western news outlets, a US military source and an Iraqi police official stated that at least 12 missiles were fired at the military base in western Iraq.

The Islamic Resistance of Iraq has claimed responsibility for the attack in a separate statement. Resistance groups in Iraq and the broader region have repeatedly cautioned the United States against its unwavering support for the Israeli regime's actions in the Gaza Strip.

The Islamic Resistance had previously warned the United States about targeting American bases in the region in response to its complicity in Israeli genocide against the Palestinians. Iraqi Resistance groups have targeted American bases in Iraq and Syria on over 100 occasions, aiming to emphasize the costs associated with supporting the Israeli regime's actions, particularly its actions in Gaza.

As tensions persist in the region, the incident at Ain al-Asad base underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics and the ongoing consequences of regional conflicts involving various actors and Resistance groups. (ILKHA)
