Maritime disruption: Istanbul Strait shuts down after tanker breakdown

The Peria fuel tanker encountered mechanical issues during its transit through the strait, prompting an immediate standstill. In response to the situation, Turkish authorities swiftly implemented a two-way traffic closure on the Bosphorus to ensure the safety of other vessels and mitigate the risk of potential accidents.

Tugboats from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety were promptly dispatched to the scene, currently engaged in efforts to tow the disabled tanker to a secure area outside the busy waterway. Fortunately, no injuries or environmental pollution have been reported as a consequence of the incident.

The closure of the Bosphorus is causing substantial delays for ships awaiting passage through this vital trade route. The strait serves as a crucial link connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, accommodating the transit of oil and cargo vessels. With over 50,000 ships estimated to navigate the Bosphorus annually, it stands as one of the world's busiest maritime channels.

Maritime authorities are actively overseeing the situation, and updates regarding the reopening of the Istanbul Strait for ship traffic are anticipated as the towing operation progresses. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and operational disruptions inherent in major maritime channels. (ILKHA)
