Qatar Emir urges immediate ceasefire in meeting with US Secretary of State
Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, pressed for an immediate ceasefire during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday.
Emir Al Thani emphasized the urgency of working towards a swift cessation of hostilities, ensuring the protection of civilians, facilitating sustained humanitarian aid delivery to all parts of the Gaza Strip, and striving to de-escalate tensions for regional stability and security.
Later, Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, held a press conference in Doha alongside Secretary Blinken, expressing that the recent killing of a senior Hamas leader had impacted Qatar's mediation efforts in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Despite the setback, Qatar affirmed its commitment to ongoing mediation endeavors. Secretary Blinken asserted that he would address the issue of protecting civilians during his upcoming visit to Tel Aviv, emphasizing the right of Palestinian civilians to return to their homes and avoiding forced evacuations from Gaza.
The israeli offensive on Gaza, ongoing since October 7, 2023, has resulted in a significant death toll, including many children, with Qatar actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to bring about a ceasefire. (ILKHA)
