WHO Chief denounces israeli airstrikes on Gaza's health facilities
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed strong condemnation on Tuesday for the airstrikes targeting the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) headquarters in Gaza, denouncing them as "unconscionable."
Tedros emphasized that health facilities should never be targeted during conflicts and highlighted the dire humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.
The PRCS reported that israel struck its headquarters in the southern city of Khan Younis twice, resulting in "five casualties and three injuries" among displaced individuals seeking refuge at the facility and a nearby hospital.
“I deplore today’s strikes on the PRCS-run Al-Amal hospital,” Tedros said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.
He revealed that WHO staff and colleagues from the UN humanitarian agency OCHA conducted a mission to the facilities on Tuesday, witnessing extensive damage and the displacement of civilians.
According to Tedros, approximately 14,000 people were sheltering at the hospital, with many now leaving due to fears for their safety. He stressed the need to protect hospitals, ambulances, health workers, and individuals seeking care at all times under international humanitarian law.
Describing the current situation in Gaza, Tedros stated: "Today’s bombardments are unconscionable. Gaza’s health system is already on its knees, with health and aid workers continuously stymied in their efforts to save lives due to the hostilities."
Tedros reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire and urgent action to provide food, medical supplies, and water to the Gazan population enduring "unspeakable conditions of hunger, disease spread, and lack of hygiene and sanitation."
He expressed concern over the limited medical evacuations from Gaza, describing it as unacceptable given the dire humanitarian catastrophe unfolding over the past three months. The WHO chief urged immediate intervention to address the critical situation in Gaza and provide essential assistance to those affected by the conflict. (ILKHA)
