In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tedros highlighted the persistent health challenges faced by individuals living in overcrowded shelters from mid-October to mid-December. The WHO chief noted that over 424,000 people are grappling with health issues in the region.

“WHO and partners are working tirelessly to support health authorities in increasing disease surveillance and control. This involves supplying medicines and testing kits to facilitate prompt detection and response to infectious diseases such as hepatitis. Additionally, efforts are underway to enhance access to safe water, food, and hygiene and sanitation services,” Tedros stated.

The conflict has forced nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people to evacuate their homes, with many continuously on the move amid ongoing israeli military operations. These displaced individuals find themselves seeking refuge in makeshift tents or huddled under tarpaulins and plastic sheets in open areas.

This surge in violence has raised the overall death toll in Gaza to 21,507, representing about one percent of the region's population. The dire situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a cessation of hostilities to address the escalating health crisis and the broader impact on the well-being of the population.
