Former Guinea military ruler taken from prison by armed group

The group reportedly stormed a jail in the capital city, Conakry, in the early hours of Saturday, abducting Camara and three others. One of the captives has been located, while it remains unclear whether they were kidnapped or not.

According to local sources, Camara had returned to Guinea in September 2022 to face justice, having lived in Burkina Faso after being ousted and fleeing the country following the Conakry killings and an assassination attempt.

Guinea is currently under military rule, one of several former French colonies in West and Central Africa that have experienced coups in recent years.

The most recent coup occurred in 2021, led by former French soldier Col Mamady Doumbouya, who rebelled against then-President Alpha Condé and was later sworn in as president.

The authorities have closed Guinea's borders while searching for Camara and the other missing individuals.

Gunshots were reported in Conakry, beginning in the early hours of the morning. The city center was cordoned off, and military vehicles were observed on the streets.

The situation is developing as authorities work to locate the individuals and hold those responsible accountable. (ILKHA)
