Guterres, in a statement released last night, conveyed his shock and dismay over the reported attack, highlighting the distressing scenes of casualties lying on the streets outside Al Shifa Hospital. He further emphasized the continuous siege on civilians in Gaza for nearly a month, underscoring the violence against innocent civilians, particularly women and children, and their displacement from homes.

Describing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as distressing, Guterres emphasized the dire lack of essential resources. Shortages of food, water, and medicine, dwindling fuel for hospitals and water facilities, overcrowded UNRWA shelters facing bombardments, overflowing morgues, and depleted stores have led to an abysmal sanitation situation. Moreover, the escalating health issues, especially among children, have added to the trauma experienced by the entire population.

Calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, Guterres stressed the urgent need to adhere to international humanitarian law, protecting civilians, medical workers, and vital infrastructure. He urged unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, highlighting the critical requirement for essential supplies and services in the face of the escalating crisis.

The Secretary-General appealed to all parties with influence to exert their power, ensuring compliance with the rules of war, ending the suffering in Gaza, and preventing the conflict from engulfing the entire region. (ILKHA)
