U.S. unveils new security aid package for Ukraine
The Department of Defense (DoD) announced a substantial augmentation of security assistance for Ukraine, totaling over $425 million, to address immediate defense needs and bolster long-term capabilities against Russian aggression.
In an announcement today, the DoD revealed a comprehensive security aid allocation aimed at fortifying Ukraine's defense infrastructure.
The assistance comprises a $125 million drawdown from DoD inventories, targeting immediate battlefield requirements, and an additional $300 million under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) to enhance Ukraine's air defense systems for the long term.*
This new aid installment signifies the Biden Administration's fiftieth provision of equipment from DoD stocks since August 2021.
The aid encompasses various military resources, including advanced air defense assets, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weaponry, and other equipment crucial for Ukraine's efforts to counter Russia's sustained attacks.
Detailed capabilities incorporated in this package comprise supplementary munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), a range of artillery rounds, anti-armor systems such as TOW missiles and Javelin, over 3 million rounds of small arms ammunition, specialized munitions for obstacle clearing, anti-personnel Claymore munitions, heavy equipment transport vehicles, cold weather gear, and maintenance equipment.
