UN Security Council to discuss humanitarian crisis in Gaza

This comes in the aftermath of Israel's recent expansion of its ground operation in the Palestinian territory over the weekend.

The meeting, requested by the United Arab Emirates, will feature a comprehensive update by UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, which is responsible for providing crucial aid to Palestinians in the region.

Over the weekend, UN Secretary-General António Guterres voiced disappointment at Israel's decision to escalate military operations instead of heeding the call for a much-needed humanitarian pause, a move widely supported by the international community.

The Security Council's attempts to secure a ceasefire resolution have hit a deadlock on four occasions due to the exercise of vetoes, either by Russia or the United States.

According to UN reports, anecdotal evidence indicates that in the northern parts of Gaza, airstrikes are seemingly systematically targeting and demolishing residential areas.

This emergency meeting reflects the growing concern and urgency within the international community regarding the deteriorating situation in Gaza, as military actions continue to exacerbate the already dire humanitarian crisis. (ILKHA)
