Assad is on his first official trip to China in almost two decades as he seeks financial support to rebuild his devastated country, as well as rehabilitation for his regime from years of isolation over Syria's civil war.

The two leaders met on Friday afternoon, as reported by state media, and discussed the strengthening of their ties. President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of their new strategic partnership in the face of global instability and uncertainty.

"Today, we will jointly announce the establishment of the China-Syria strategic partnership, which will become an important milestone in the history of bilateral relations," President Xi told President Assad during their meeting, as stated in a readout from state broadcaster CCTV.

"China is willing to continue to work together with Syria, firmly support each other, promote friendly cooperation, and jointly defend international fairness and justice," President Xi added, highlighting their commitment to mutual support and cooperation.

Xi Jinping also noted that the relationship between the two nations has endured the challenges of international changes and has grown stronger over time.

The meeting between the two leaders took place around a large rectangular wooden table, as seen in a video clip from CCTV. The meeting room featured two flags from each country alongside a Chinese painting, symbolizing the diplomatic encounter.

As part of his visit, President Assad is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Saturday, further signifying the growing ties between Syria and China. This visit to China is President Assad's first since 2004.

The announcement of the strategic partnership between China and Syria is expected to have far-reaching implications on the global geopolitical landscape, particularly in the Middle East, as China expands its influence in the region. (ILKHA)
