Moroccan earthquake death toll rises to 2,012
Morocco's Interior Ministry has confirmed that the death toll in the devastating 7-magnitude earthquake that struck Marrakech has risen to 2,012.
The earthquake has also left 2,059 people injured, with 1,404 of them in serious condition, according to a statement released by the ministry.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 100 kilometers southeast of Marrakech.
The powerful earthquake sent shockwaves not only through Marrakech but also in other major cities, including the capital Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Agadir, and Fes.
In response to this tragedy, the Royal Court issued a statement reporting that a meeting was convened at the Royal Palace in Rabat, presided over by King Mohammed VI. The purpose of the meeting was to address the aftermath of the earthquake.
During the meeting, King Mohammed VI made the decision to declare a period of national mourning lasting three days in Morocco.
The King ordered that flags at public institutions across the country be lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect for the victims of this devastating natural disaster. (ILKHA)
