Syrian Foreign Minister: Turkish troop withdrawal crucial for normalizing relations
Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad has underlined the necessity of the withdrawal of Turkish forces from Syrian territory as a vital condition for the normalization of relations between the two countries.
In a statement reported by the state-run SANA news agency, Minister Mekdad emphasized that bringing an end to the Turkish presence in northern Syria is the sole pathway to restoring the previously harmonious relations between Syria and Türkiye.
Türkiye's military involvement in northern Syria has been a contentious issue, with Syria asserting that the withdrawal of Turkish troops is essential to resolving diplomatic tensions. The Syrian government considers the presence of Turkish forces in these areas, established through military operations since 2017, to be an illegal occupation.
Türkiye's military campaigns in northern Syria, including Operation Euphrates Shield, Operation Olive Branch, and Operation Peace Spring, have resulted in the creation of a security buffer zone between the cities of Azaz and Jarabulus to the north of Aleppo, the occupation of Afrin, and control over border regions east of the Euphrates River. These actions have been at the heart of the strained relations between the two neighboring countries.
The Syrian Foreign Minister's statement underscores the importance of addressing this issue to pave the way for improved relations between Syria and Türkiye. The call for the withdrawal of Turkish forces remains a central point in the ongoing diplomatic dialogue aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the regional conflict. (ILKHA)
