Turkish coast guard rescues migrants pushed back by Greek forces
The Turkish Coast Guard successfully rescued 67 irregular migrants off the coast of Izmir after they were reportedly pushed back by Greek forces. An additional 43 migrants were captured near the coasts of Izmir and Aydın.
The Turkish Coast Guard swiftly responded to an alert about a group of irregular migrants stranded on life rafts off the shores of Izmir. Dispatching their boats to the scene, the Coast Guard successfully brought the migrants safely ashore.
According to the migrants, they had been forcefully returned to Turkish waters by Greek forces. Their harrowing journey was part of an attempt to reach Europe in search of better living conditions and opportunities.
The rescued migrants, numbering 67 in total, were later transported to the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management located in Izmir. Meanwhile, the 43 migrants who were captured in separate incidents off the coasts of Izmir and Aydın were also transferred to the respective Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in the two provinces.
This operation is just one among many conducted by the Turkish Coast Guard, aiming to rescue irregular migrants who have faced pushbacks by Greek forces in recent months. The actions of the Greek government have raised accusations of violating international law, as migrants are often left stranded in perilous conditions as a result of these pushbacks.
As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, urging for measures that ensure the safety and humane treatment of migrants, as well as adherence to established legal frameworks. (ILKHA)
