Maui County authorities released a statement on Monday, reporting a tragic death toll of 115 people as a result of the wildfire's havoc. Among the deceased, 35 victims have been successfully identified, and the heart-wrenching news has been shared with 13 grieving families.

Amidst this grim scenario, Mayor Richard Bissen of Maui County took to social media to address the public. In a Facebook video message released on Monday, he acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the FBI and the Maui Police Department in the search and rescue operations.

He revealed that although over 800 individuals are still officially missing, the initial list contained a staggering 2,000 names. Mayor Bissen emphasized the importance of the collaborative efforts, which have led to the location of 1,285 individuals who have been confirmed as safe. This bittersweet revelation carries a mix of sorrow and relief as the arduous journey of recovery presses on.

The mayor cautioned that these figures are subject to fluctuation on a daily basis due to the dynamic nature of the situation. Urging the cooperation of the community, he made a heartfelt plea to those who have immediate family members unaccounted for following the wildfire to contribute DNA samples. These samples are crucial in the process of identifying the missing individuals, offering a way to provide closure for the families affected by this tragedy.

To facilitate this identification process, a dedicated Family Assistance Center has been established at the Hyatt Regency Ka'anapali on Nohea Kai Drive. This center offers a safe space for local residents to provide the necessary DNA samples, fostering a sense of solidarity and hope during these trying times.

The wildfire, which began on August 8, destroyed or damaged more than 2,200 buildings, 86% of them residential. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. (ILKHA)
