Istanbul: The province that draws the most migrants in Türkiye
The Turkish Statistical Institute has published its "Internal Migration Statistics, 2022" report, revealing that 2,791,156 individuals migrated across provinces within Türkiye during the year.
In Türkiye, the proportion of population migrated across provinces, which was 3.18% in the 2007-2008 period, followed a fluctuating course over the years and became 3.27% in 2022.
In other words, in 2022, 2 million 791 thousand 156 people migrated across provinces in Türkiye. 47.9% of this population consisted of males while 52.1% were females.
İstanbul was the province with the highest provincial in-migration while Ardahan had the lowest provincial in-migration
When the population migrated across provinces in Türkiye was examined, İstanbul was the province having the highest provincial in-migration with 385 thousand 294 people. İstanbul was followed by Ankara with 189 thousand 104 people and İzmir with 132 thousand 426 people, respectively. The provinces with the lowest provincial in-migration were Ardahan with 5 thousand 391 people, Bayburt with 7 thousand 31 people and Kilis with 8 thousand 8 people, respectively.
İstanbul was the province with the highest provincial out-migration while Tunceli had the lowest provincial out-migration
It was seen that İstanbul, Ankara and İzmir, the provinces with the highest provincial in-migration, were also the provinces with the highest provincial out-migration. İstanbul took the first place in provincial out-migration with 418 thousand 82 people and was followed by Ankara with 161 thousand 912 people and İzmir with 107 thousand 312 people. The provinces with the lowest provincial out-migration were Tunceli with 7 thousand 578 people, Kilis with 7 thousand 629 people and Ardahan with 8 thousand 157 people, respectively.
In Türkiye, 20-24 age group had the largest internal migrant population in 2022
In Türkiye, the largest internal mobility in terms of size in 2022 was in the 20-24 age group with 643 thousand 998 people. 42.5% of the internal migrants in this age group were males and 57.5% were females.
In Türkiye, the most common reason for migration in 2022 was migration related to a member of the household
In Türkiye, out of the 2 million 791 thousand 156 people who migrated across provinces in 2022, 591 thousand 790 people migrated for reasons related to a member of the household. When the other reasons for migration were examined, it was seen that 526 thousand 8 people migrated for education while 479 thousand 250 people migrated for better housing and living conditions.
Migration related to a member of the household was the most common reason for migration among both males and females
In 2022, when the reason for migration was examined by sex, it was seen that both males and females migrated mostly for reasons related to a member of the household. 237 thousand 574 males and 354 thousand 216 females migrated for reasons related to a member of the household.
Education was the most common reason for migration in the 20-24 age group which had the largest internal migrant population
When the reason for the migration of the 20-24 age group, which was the most mobile age group in Türkiye in 2022, was examined, it was seen that the most common reason for the migration was education. 257 thousand 676 of the internal migrants in this age group migrated for education, 91 thousand 612 of them migrated for starting / finding a job and 50 thousand 338 of them migrated for better housing and living conditions.
