Turkish coast guard rescues 45 irregular migrants adrift off western Türkiye
The Turkish Coast Guard Command announced on Monday that they successfully rescued 45 irregular migrants from a boat stranded off the coast of the Ayvacık district in Türkiye's northwestern Çanakkale province.
According to the statement, the boat carrying the migrants had been pushed back into Turkish territorial waters by Greek Coast Guard forces before the Turkish Coast Guard came to their aid.
Türkiye has a historical significance as a country of origin, transit, and destination for migrants, serving as a pivotal crossroads between Europe and Asia. In recent times, regional events have contributed to an increasing number of migrants choosing Türkiye as a major destination and transit country, seeking refuge from conflicts, poverty, and disasters.
As a consequence, Türkiye currently hosts one of the largest migrant and refugee populations globally, making the efforts of the Turkish Coast Guard all the more crucial in safeguarding the lives of those undertaking perilous journeys in search of safety and better prospects. (ILKHA)
