Somali authorities arrest 14 in connection with military training facility bombing
Somali authorities reported that they have arrested 14 individuals in connection with a fatal suicide bombing that targeted a military training facility in Mogadishu earlier this month.
The attack, which took place inside the Jaalle Siyad military training facility, resulted in the tragic death of over 30 people, including both new military recruits and personnel.
Deputy Defense Minister Abdifatah Kasim disclosed that the arrests comprised soldiers, senior commanders, and even the commander of the academy. A joint security committee, consisting of the national intelligence, security agency, and the army, has been formed to conduct a thorough investigation into the suicide attack that occurred on July 25.
Federal Parliament Speaker Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe had previously expressed suspicions that traitors within the military camp might be responsible for this "treacherous attack" and called for an urgent inquiry.
The incident triggered large-scale protests in Marka, the provincial capital of the Lower Shabelle region, which is believed to be the hometown of the majority of the recruits affected by the attack.
The Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the bombing and asserted that it resulted in the death of 73 soldiers while injuring over 120 others. (ILKHA)
