In an official statement, Tchiani, who leads the Presidential Guard, has been declared as the "president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland." Addressing the nation through a televised appearance, the general cited the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region as the primary reason behind the military's intervention.

He voiced criticism of the previous government's assurances about the situation being under control, highlighting the grim reality faced by the people, including death, displacement, humiliation, and frustration.

General Tchiani expressed his belief that the security measures implemented thus far have failed to bring genuine stability to the country, despite the significant sacrifices made by the people. The Armed Forces Chief, General Abdou Sidikou Issa, publicly supported the coup on Thursday, emphasizing that its intent was to avoid a potentially violent confrontation.

In response to the coup, a coalition of opposition parties, who were already against President Mohamed Bazoum's administration, called for demonstrations in support of the coup's motives. However, they also expressed disapproval of any change brought about through the use of force.

As events continue to unfold, President Mohamed Bazoum remains in custody since the events of Wednesday morning, marking a significant shift in the nation's political landscape. Further developments are being closely monitored both within Niger and internationally. (ILKHA)
