UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, expressed shock and distress over the attempted takeover and condemned it in the strongest terms.

In a statement, Volker Turk emphasized the urgency of restoring constitutional order and upholding the rule of law in Niger. He stated, "President Mohamed Bazoum must be immediately and unconditionally released, and his security ensured. The arbitrarily detained members of his government and their relatives must also be released forthwith, and without preconditions."

The UN's appeal for the prompt release of President Bazoum and the detained government members underscores the international community's commitment to protecting democratic principles and human rights in the region.

Furthermore, the statement urged all parties involved to refrain from violence and respect the rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens. Safeguarding the democratic gains achieved in Niger in recent years is crucial to ensuring the well-being of the nation's people.

In solidarity with the United Nations, the European Union, United States, and African Union have also condemned the overthrow of Niger's president. The collective stance of these international bodies emphasizes the gravity of the situation and the imperative of restoring stability and democratic governance in Niger.

The attempted military takeover has drawn significant global concern, with the international community closely monitoring developments in the country. The unanimous condemnation serves as a united front in demanding the swift return to constitutional order and the preservation of democratic values in Niger. (ILKHA)
