Magnitude 5.5 earthquake rattles southern Türkiye

The earthquake occurred at around 08:44 TSI, with its epicenter at a latitude of 37.632 degrees north and a longitude of 35.902 degrees east, and at a depth of 11.27 km, Türkiye’s Disaster, and Emergency Management Presidency announced on its website.

The tremor was felt in nearby provinces, including Gaziantep, Kilis, Niğde, Kahramanmaraş and Kayseri.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage after the earthquake.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said that teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to assess the damage.

AFAD also urged people to stay away from damaged buildings and to follow the instructions of local authorities.

The earthquake is the latest in a series of tremors to hit Türkiye in recent months.

On February 6, a 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Türkiye and northern and western Syria, killing about 60,000 people. (ILKHA)
