NATO urged to deploy troops to Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Zvizdić, has called on NATO alliance members and supporters of Bosnia and Herzegovina's integral, sovereign, multi-ethnic, anti-fascist, European, and democratic principles to deploy NATO soldiers to the Brcko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Zvizdić made the appeal in a statement ahead of the upcoming NATO summit, which will include discussions on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Western Balkan region. He said that such a decision would serve as a preventive measure to halt the secession project of the Republika Srpska (RS) entity, initiated through recent decisions of the RS National Assembly.
"By doing so, the secessionist agenda would be permanently disabled, effectively eliminating one of the most significant threats faced by Bosnia and Herzegovina," Zvizdić said.
He added that the majority of Bosnian citizens strongly desire peace, stability, and progress, and they would warmly welcome the deployment of NATO forces in the Brcko District as a lasting solution to counter the long-standing anti-state and secessionist policies.
The Brcko District is a self-governing district within Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was established by the Dayton Agreement, which ended the Bosnian War in 1995. The district is under the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but it is administered by an international supervisor appointed by the Peace Implementation Council.
The RS entity is one of two entities that make up Bosnia and Herzegovina. The other entity is the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The RS entity has been seeking to secede from Bosnia and Herzegovina for several years. In recent months, the RS entity has taken a number of steps that have been seen as undermining the authority of the central government in Sarajevo.
The deployment of NATO troops to the Brcko District would be a significant development. It would send a clear message to the RS entity that its secessionist ambitions will not be tolerated. It would also provide reassurance to Bosnian citizens who are concerned about the future of their country.
It remains to be seen whether NATO will agree to deploy troops to the Brcko District. However, Zvizdić's appeal has put the issue on the agenda of the upcoming NATO summit. (ILKHA)
