Türkiye ranks 18th in the world by population size, with 85.2 million people
Türkiye was in the 18th rank among 194 countries by the population size, the Turkish Statistical Institute said in a statement on Thursday.
The date of 11 July 1987 when the world's population reached 5 billion, was accepted as the "World Population Day" by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 1989. On this special day, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) carries out activities to raise awareness on population and development by drawing attention to important population issues every year.
It is estimated that the world population reached 6 billion in 1999, 7 billion in 2011 and 8 billion in 2022. According to the United Nations population estimates, while the country with the highest population in 2022 was China with 1 billion 425 million 887 thousand 337 people, it was followed by India with 1 billion 417 million 173 thousand 173 people and by the United States with 338 million 289 thousand 857 people. These three countries constituted 39.9% of the world's total population.
Türkiye, with a population of 85 million 279 thousand 553 people, ranks 18th among 194 countries by the population size, constituting 1.1% of the world's total population.
The country with the highest proportion of child population was Central African Republic
According to the United Nations population estimates when the proportion of 0-17 age group child population in the total population was analyzed by countries, the country with the highest proportion of child population was Central African Republic with 55.8% in 2022. This country was followed by Niger with 55.6% and by Chad with 54.3%. The country with the lowest proportion of child population was Republic of Korea with 14.2%. This country was followed by Japan and Singapore with 14.3%, Italy and Monaco with 15.3%.
World average of the proportion of child population was 30.0% in 2022. It was seen that the proportion of Türkiye child population with 26.5% was lower than that of the world child population average.
Proportion of Türkiye child population was higher than that of the EU member countries
According to the United Nations population estimates when the proportions of child population of 27 European Union (EU) member countries were analyzed, in 2022, the countries with the highest proportion of child population were Ireland with 23.6%, Sweden with 21.1% and France with 20.9%, respectively. The countries with the lowest proportion of child population were Italy with 15.3%, Malta with 15.6% and Portugal with 16.2%, respectively.
It was seen that the proportion of Türkiye child population with 26.5% was higher than that of the EU member countries.
The country with the highest proportion of youth population was Syria
According to the United Nations population estimates when the proportion of 15-24 age group youth population in the total population was analyzed by countries, the country with the highest proportion of youth population was Syria with 23.6% in 2022. That country was followed by Timor-Leste with 22.3% and by Central African Republic with 22.1%. The country with the lowest proportion of youth population was Qatar with 7.2%. That country was followed by Ukraine with 7.8%, Monaco with 8.4%.
World average of the proportion of youth population was 15.5% in 2022. It was seen that the proportion of Türkiye youth population with 15.2% was just below the world youth population average.
Proportion of Türkiye youth population was higher than that of the EU member countries
According to the United Nations population estimates when the proportions of youth population of 27 EU member countries were analyzed, in 2022, the countries with the highest proportion of youth population were Ireland with 13.0%, Denmark and Netherlands with 12.1% and France with 11.8%, respectively. The countries with the lowest proportion of youth population were Bulgaria with 9.2%, Czechia with 9.4%, Malta, Slovenia and Lithuania with 9.5%, respectively.
It was seen that the proportion of Türkiye youth population with 15.2% was higher than that of the 27 EU member countries.
The country with the highest proportion of elderly population was Monaco
According to the United Nations population estimates when the proportion of 65 years and over elderly population in the total population was analyzed by countries, the country with the highest proportion of elderly population was Monaco with 35.9% in 2022. That country was followed by Japan with 29.9% and by Italy with 24.1%. The country with the lowest proportion of youth population was Qatar with 1.5%. This country was followed by Uganda and Zambia with 1.7%, United Arab Emirates with 1.8%.
World average of the proportion of elderly population was 9.8% in 2022. It was seen that the proportion of Türkiye elderly population with 9.9% was just above the world elderly population average.
Proportion of Türkiye elderly population was lower than that of the EU member countries
According to the United Nations population estimates when the proportions of youth population of 27 EU member countries were analyzed, in 2022, the countries with the highest proportion of elderly population were Italy with 24.1%, Finland with 23.3% and Portugal with 22.9%, respectively. The countries with the lowest proportion of elderly population were Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus with 14.8%, Luxembourg with 15.0% and Ireland with 15.1%, respectively.
It was seen that the proportion of Türkiye elderly population with 9.9% was lower than that of the 27 EU member countries.
The country with the highest total fertility rate was Niger with 6.75 children
According to the United Nations population estimates when the total fertility rate was analyzed by countries, the country with the highest total fertility rate was Niger with 6.75 children in 2022. That country was followed by Chad with 6.22 children and Somalia with 6.20 children. The country with the lowest total fertility rate was Republic of Korea with 0.87 children. That country was followed by Singapore with 1.04 children and Andorra and San Marino with 1.14 children.
The world average of the total fertility rate was 2.31 children in 2022. It was seen that the total fertility rate in Türkiye was below the world total fertility rate with 1.62 children.
The EU country with the highest total fertility rate was France with 1.79 children
According to the United Nations world population estimates when the total fertility rates of 27 EU member countries were analyzed, the country with the highest total fertility rate in 2022 was France with 1.79 children. That country was followed by Ireland with 1.76 children and Romania with 1.74 children. The country with the lowest total fertility rate was Malta with 1.20 children. That country was followed by Spain and Italy with 1.29 children and Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus with 1.31 children. With the total fertility rate of 1.62 in 2022, Türkiye ranked 10th among EU member countries.
The country with the highest life expectancy at birth for males was Monaco
According to the United Nations world population estimates life expectancy at birth in 2022 was 71.7 years, 69.1 years for males and 74.4 years for females worldwide.
When the life expectancy at birth of the countries were analyzed in 2022, the country with the highest life expectancy at birth for males was Monaco with 85.1 years. That country was followed by Liechtenstein with 83.0 years and Switzerland with 82.5 years. The country with the lowest life expectancy at birth for males was Lesotho with 50.3 years. That country was followed by Chad with 51.3 years and the Central African Republic with 52.3 years.
It was seen that life expectancy at birth, which was 75.0 years for males in Türkiye was higher than the world average.

When the life expectancy at birth of the countries were analyzed in 2022, the country with the highest life expectancy at birth for females was Monaco with 88.9 years. That country was followed by Japan with 87.8 years and Republic of Korea with 87.1 years. The country with the lowest life expectancy at birth for females was Nigeria with 54.0 years. That country was followed by Chad with 54.8 years and Lesotho with 55.9 years.
It was seen that life expectancy at birth, which was 80.5 years for females in Türkiye was higher than the world average.
Spain has the highest life expectancy at birth for females among the EU countries
According to the United Nations world population estimates when the life expectancy at birth for females of 27 EU member countries were analyzed, the country with the highest life expectancy at birth for females was Spain with 86.5 years in 2022. That country was followed by Italy and France with 86.0 years and Malta with 85.7 years. The country with the lowest life expectancy at birth for females was Bulgaria with 75.1 years. That country was followed by Romania with 77.6 years and Hungary with 78.3 years.
It was seen that life expectancy at birth, which was 80.5 years for females in Türkiye was lower than the average of EU member states. (ILKHA)
