Unclaimed bodies remain a month after fatal train crash in India
In a tragic incident that occurred on June 2, a deadly train crash in the eastern state of Odisha, India, has left 52 bodies unclaimed a month after the incident.
The accident took place when a passenger train collided with a stationary goods train, causing it to derail onto an adjacent track.
The overturned coaches were then struck by another passing train, resulting in a devastating loss of life. With at least 293 people killed, this has been deemed the deadliest rail accident in India this century, leaving over 1,000 others injured.
Despite the restoration of the accident site, many families are struggling to find closure as they continue their tireless search for the remains of their loved ones. The 52 bodies, preserved in a deep-freeze container, present additional challenges for identification as some are in a deteriorated state.
At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), out of the total 81 bodies, 29 have been successfully identified through DNA testing.
22 of these bodies have been laid to rest through the cremation process, as confirmed by an official. "Currently, there are 52 bodies of the train accident victims at AIIMS Bhubaneswar," the official added.
The quest for resolution remains as families anxiously await closure, hoping to locate and honor their lost relatives.
Efforts to identify and reunite the remaining bodies with their families continue amidst the challenging circumstances. (ILKHA)
