Sudan: Intense clashes in Omdurman as army tries to cut off supply routes

Local reports indicate that the army conducted airstrikes and unleashed heavy artillery bombardment on Tuesday, with ground battles unfolding in multiple parts of Omdurman.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed to have successfully downed a fighter jet, while residents shared footage appearing to show pilots ejecting from a plane. The army has not yet provided an immediate response or comment.

Local sources have reported that Tuesday's fighting in Omdurman represents the most intense clashes witnessed in weeks, with the army successfully repelling an RSF attack on a police base as the paramilitary group sought to gain territory.

The conflict between the army and RSF has brought daily clashes to the capital, instigated ethnically motivated killings in the western region of Darfur, and posed a significant threat of plunging Sudan into a protracted civil war.

As the conflict has escalated, the RSF swiftly seized control of substantial areas in Khartoum and bolstered its ranks by deploying additional fighters from Darfur and Kordofan.

The group has been using bridges connecting Omdurman to Khartoum and Khartoum North, the three cities at the convergence of the Blue Nile and White Nile, which together constitute the wider capital region, to transport its reinforcements. (ILKHA)
