The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in at least 37 people sustaining injuries, with four in critical condition.

Rescue teams are currently searching for two individuals who are feared to be trapped under the debris. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin informed reporters at the scene that search dogs had detected a scent beneath the mound of rubble on Rue Saint-Jacques, raising the possibility of finding survivors or casualties.

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, and the Paris prosecutor's office stated that it is too early to make any definitive conclusions.

However, local Deputy Mayor Edouard Civel mentioned a gas explosion in a Twitter post, and witnesses reported a strong smell of gas just moments before the blast occurred.

The affected building is identified as the Paris American Academy, a private school founded in 1965, offering courses in fashion design, interior design, fine arts, and creative writing. Located in the fifth arrondissement of central Paris, the Rue Saint-Jacques connects prominent landmarks such as Notre Dame cathedral, Sorbonne University, and the Val de Grace military hospital. The area is popular among tourists and foreign students, particularly during the early summer months.

Over 200 firefighters swiftly responded to the emergency, battling the blaze and dousing it with water hoses. Television footage captured thick black smoke billowing into the sky as firefighters worked tirelessly to control the situation.

While investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing, the immediate focus remains on rescue operations and ensuring the safety of those affected by the incident. (ILKHA)
